December 2013 Events Preview


    Edgewater, New Jersey is a great place to live! Rich in history and close to many recreational areas as well as providing great schools for children, Edgewater has a lot to feel good about.

    One of the best characteristics of Edgewater is its proximity to rich cultural experiences. There is a wonderful variety of holiday events in vicinity of Edgewater this year.

    Traditional Holiday Light Show

    November 28th through January 6th -A Holiday light show in Historic Smithville less than 40 miles from Edgewater, Smithville has over 100 trees lit up on Lake Meone coordinated with musical patterns.

    The Smithville village is also decorated for Christmas as a historical Victorian village would be decorated. The lightshow is ongoing Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 5 pm to 8:30 pm until January 6. This event is at 615 E Moss Mill Road, Absecon, NJ. Call 609-748-6160 for information.

    Cantorial Concert

    Sunday, December 1, 2013 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm Kaplen Jewish Community Center’s Annual Cantorial Concert will be performed at the Center on the Palisades at 411 East Clinton Avenue.

    Since Chanukah begins the evening of November 25 and continues through the evening of December 5, the melodies will be especially timely and moving. This promises to be an extraordinary experience. For more information, call 201-569-7900 or email Ruth Yung

    Book Signing and Discussion

    Wednesday, December 4, at 7:00 pm Christina Baker Kline will talk about her New York Times bestselling novel The Orphan Train at the Paramus Public library. In 1850, there were an estimated 30,000 orphan children in New York City.

    The orphans were transported by train to foster homes across the country. The Paramus Public Library will host a book discussion with the author Christina Baker Kline. Books are available for purchase in advance for $15 to be signed by the author. Space is limited. Registration is required. For additional information, call 201-599-1309.

    Nutcracker Suite in Jazz

    On December 7, 2013 at 3:00pm Duke Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite will be performed at the Apollo Theater. This performance is exclusive to the Apollo and is the Tchaikovsky score with colorful jazz infusions and vibrant solos. Ellington’s Sacred Music will be performed the second half. Starring Lizz Wright, Priscilla Baskerville and tap master Savion Glover and the Abyssinian Baptist Church Choir.

    Music from Handel’s Messiah and Other Numbers

    Sunday, December 8, 2013 at 3:00 pm at Ridgewood United Methodist Church, 100 Dayton Street in Ridgewood, New Jersey. The Ridgewood Singers have approximately forty members from Bergen County and the North Jersey area and sing a variety of music from classical to show tunes.

    The Ridgewood Singers will celebrate 60 years with an Anniversary Concert with selections from Handel’s Messiah. Guest soloists and a chamber orchestra will be performing. A reception with light refreshments will follow. Tickets can be purchased at the door and are $18.00 general and $15.00 for seniors and students. Guests are asked to bring a donation for a local food bank.

    Irish Fiddle Music

    Saturday, December 14 at 4:00 pm and 8 pm Eileen Ivers and Immigrant Soul will perform a magical holiday show featuring her innovative Irish fiddle music. Eileen is familiar to many because of her performances in Riverdance. This performance will be at Ramapo Community College Sharp Theatre.
